Admiral Stavridis was the First Commander of the Navy's "Deep Blue" strategic and tactical think tank following the 9/11 Pentagon attacks. A distinguished leader and longest-serving global commander in recent American military history, Admiral Stavridis provides answers and strategies to address the most pressing global affairs challenges, including a most timely topic, cyber security.

Admiral James Stavridis, USN, (Ret), PhD

 

O'Connor House, in collaboration with the Phoenix Committee on Foreign Relations, The McCain Institute and The Pakis Family Foundation, will welcome Admiral James Stavridis to our Distinguished Speakers Series.

 

In addition, he will participate in an on-stage conversation with Justice Sandra Day O'Connor with Q&A conducted by Ambassador Kurt Volker of the McCain Institute.

 

Admiral Stavridis is the Dean of the Fletcher School of Law and Diplomacy at Tufts University, as well as the Chairman of the Board for the U.S. Naval Institute. From 2009 through 2013, Admiral Stavridis served as the NATO 16th Supreme Allied Commander in Europe and was the first commander of the Navy's "Deep Blue" strategic and tactical think tank following the 9/11 Pentagon attacks.   

 

From 2006 to 2009, Admiral Stavridis led US Southern Command in Miami, responsible for thousands of troops throughout 36 nations and territories in Latin American and Caribbean.  

 

A graduate of the U.S. Naval Academy, he holds a PhD in International Relations and a Master of Arts in Law and Diplomacy from The Fletcher School of Law and Diplomacy, Tufts University, earning the Gullion Prize, graduating at the top of his class.  Admiral Stavridis is the author or editor of five books on leadership, maritime affairs, Latin America, innovation and has published over 100 articles.

Also, commander of US European Commander with 100,000 Department of Defense employees in 51 countries,including Israel and Russia. 2009-2013

  • Latin American and Caribbean. Reshaped the organization into an interagency, private-public model of “smart power.” 2006-2009
  • First commander of Navy’s “Deep Blue” strategic and tactical think tank after 9/11 Pentagon attacks. Focus on innovative solutions to complex problems, including “soft power” approaches and hospital ship operations. 2001-2002
  • Author or editor of five books on leadership, maritime affairs, Latin America, and innovation. Published over 100 articles. Selected bibliography on Wikipedia.
  • Frequent international speaker, including 2012 Global TED talk
  • Multiple seagoing operational commands, including Navy destroyers, squadrons of ships, Carrier Strike Group (10,000+ sailors), NATO, two Combatant Commands, global ops throughout Navy career.
  • Senior Military Assistant to Secretary of Defense and Secretary of the Navy. Ran large and complex staff operations for demanding principals in DC environment.
