Julie Nguyen will be speaking about the challenges and opportunities of doing business in Vietnam. Julie's talk will cover:

  • Overview of Vietnam as an emerging and promising market in Southeast Asia
  • Ways to tap into women's entrepreneurship and youth's dynamics and talent in Vietnam for your business success
  • Exploring social entrepreneurship in Vietnam and best ways to promote corporate social responsibility, with a case study of supporting business women who are poor and/or with a disability

Dr. Julie Dai Trang Nguyen holds a Bachelor of Commerce, Honours Economics from Concordia University (Montréal), a Masters in Economics, and a PhD (2004) in Interdisciplinary Studies and Asian Research both from the University of British Columbia (Vancouver). She was a consultant for the United Nations in Hanoi in 1997, and has worked on many international development projects funded by the Canadian International Development Agency, the International Development Research Centre, the Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council of Canada, as well as a research on women's entrepreneurship in Vietnam funded by the Asia-Pacific Foundation of Canada in the Southeast Asia Business Research program in 1998.


Nguyen was a research associate at the Centre for Southeast Asia Research at the University of British Columbia (1996-99), conducted her postdoctoral research at the Munk School of Global Affairs (2004-06), and taught courses in Political Science, Asia-Pacific Studies, and Humanities at the University of Toronto and UTSC (2005-10). She is the author of two books on Ho Chi Minh, both written in English and Vietnamese, published in 2010 and 2013.


Nguyen is currently a Professor and Program Coordinator in International Business at Centennial College in Toronto, Ontario, Canada. She is also a Director of the Canada-Vietnam Trade Council, a non-profit organization founded in 2009 that promotes trade and investment between the two countries. In this capacity, she has worked closely with trade organizations in Canada including DFATD, Ontario Ministry of Economic Development, Trade and Employment, the City of Toronto, Export Development Canada, and Trade Facilitation Office, and those in Vietnam including Vietnam Chamber of Commerce and Industry, Vietrade, International Trade Promotion Centre of Ho Chi Minh City, and many business associations. She received the "Outstanding Overseas Vietnamese Entrepreneur Award"from the Ministry of Industry and Trade of Vietnam in 2012 for her contribution to the promotion of trade and investment between Canada and Vietnam, and was featured in the Canadian Institute Management (CIM) Toronto Manager Magazine in summer 2014 issue.
